Mr A. Davies BA(Hons) Dip BA PGCE Cert SpLD
Senior Master, Head of English, Teacher of Business Studies
"It is a very exciting prospect to take over the English teaching at Thornlow, and I am thoroughly enjoying getting to know the talents, abilities and potential of the children.
I hope to provide a varied and challenging range of weekly topics, with supporting work on grammar, punctuation, handwriting and spelling. I also hope that all the pupils will find the lessons stimulating, rewarding and enjoyable and that we work together to help every child make the very best progress.
The spelling groups in Years 3-6 have been selected by an initial test and it is important that they find their given level is appropriate to be sufficiently challenging. The spelling tests will be on a Monday and they should have their weekly list by the preceding Thursday. Please let me know if they are having any issues with learning their spellings.
Homework should also be clearly accessible through 'its learning' as should any support or extension material. I try to ensure that all the pupils have a clear idea what their set homework task is before they leave school. Some children get very anxious over homework, so do please let me know if this is the case, and reassure them that I am happy for them to ask for more time, help or clarification.
Years 7-8, in addition to their main homework, will have a weekly research/revision exercise that will support their spelling, grammar, punctuation and knowledge of language. This is a useful ten-minute extension exercise which they should answer, as much as they can, by the Monday lesson.
I aim to give every child as much individual support and encouragement as I can, and am delighted to be teaching in a school where the small class size allows time to support individual learning styles."
